Literature Text

the scars are paling, these
morose petals with
thick black seams,
chaste and numb as words
or virgins.

they leave me with nothing
but stain, skirt,
skein: two arms that I
can barely lift
and a tangle of useless
filaments
like stars, or veins.

in the background, springtime blisters
as secondary, stable, and
thoughtless as rhyme.

I love "chaste and numb as words...or virgins" - it makes me lose a little faith in words, words that we put so much emphasis on, so much weight in their influence... and we realize that for all the responsibility we give them, they are just virgins... they have no experience of their own; they have nothing to offer but themselves. 'numb' makes me uncomfortable, somehow. words cannot feel on their own, we have to feel for them.

"thoughtless as rhyme" makes me ashamed; as if rhyming sacrifices something to the true meaning.

this is wonderful. thank you for writing it.
