some dull scrape
over a pretty face
give or take
to put me in my place
naked, beautiful
swallowed by the sea
isn’t it a pity?

I’ll break my chains and then
(queen of queens, ruler of men)
I’ll stake my claim over whole galaxies
foolish to think that you could offer me
(wasn’t it?)

Andromeda calling

a mouthful of stars
and a handful of batteries
by fits and starts
we’ll conquer their batteries
flying powerful
over messes of artillery
see their scales gleam

I’ll break my chains and then
(queen of queens, ruler of men)
I’ll stake my claim over whole galaxies
foolish to think that you could offer me
(anything)

Andromeda calling

listen close
I won’t be your scapegoat
I don’t care
whether you sink or float
I’m not interested
in playing the maiden
I’ll rescue myself

I’ll break my chains and then
(queen of queens, ruler of men)
I’ll stake my claim over whole galaxies
foolish to think that you could offer me
(to anyone)

The myth of Andromeda: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andromed...
A lot of the traditional paintings of Andromeda are just weirdly sexualised. Like, I get that it's a naked woman chained to a rock, but in so many of these paintings her poses are the traditional "oh, woe is me, but look how sexy I am" kind of rubbish. She is about to be eaten by a sea monster. She should not be presented as some perfect, pale, unnaturally hairless body just chilling out waiting to die and, while she's at it, being sexually idealised for the male gaze. She is going to be sacrificed. This is not sexy, it's horrific.
Examples of paintings that annoy me: www.wikipaintings.org/en/theod...
www.shafe.co.uk/art/Poynter-_A... And don't even get me STARTED on the modern illustrations.
Examples of ones that got the pose/expression right even though she's still hairless for some reason (???): www.wikipaintings.org/en/gusta...
framingpainting.com/painting/a...
I wanted to present Andromeda as a strong woman, not just an object of sacrifice, and thus this song. I'm also thinking about a painting of my own...hm.

Upon rereading this it, too, reminds me of Amanda Palmer.

Congrats on the DLD. Your point is so well taken about how she is typically painted. I hope you do, indeed, paint your own version!

You definitely should. Also, I really like how you've made Perseus irrelevant in your lyrics. It would be great to see Andromeda painted as neither beauty queen nor helpless maiden waiting for rescue.

Thank you for sharing this. I recently watched one episode of "Game of Thrones" this past weekend with friends. It mirrors the ugly, sad pagan "values" and gender roles of power and domination that you are trying to highlight, here, I think. What was more disturbing, is that it's a nationally renowned television show. How is this appealing except to sadists and sociopaths? This is wonderful work, and reminded me of the culture that we seem to be breeding, and how much it is congruent with the failed trajectory of ancient eastern Europe.

the level of misogyny in media is just appalling all around.

I agree. I have a sad suspicion that the dawn of the information age and misogynist pornography being immediately accessible to minors is silently creating a more harsh, angry, stupid world of men.
